The story of Botallack is the story of Cornish tin mining. Tin has been mined in Cornwall for hundreds of years, but the heyday was in the 18th and 19th centuries. Miners tunnelled shafts far out into the ocean, nearly half a mile out and 150 meters below sea level. In the mid-1800's the mine employed 299 men, 116 females, and 115 boys. By the end of the century the mine had been closed because of financial difficulties, and although it was reopened, it was never again a success. An attempt was made in the 1980's to return the mine to production, and new headgear was constructed, but a collapse in the world price of tin made the venture unprofitable. |
