Built on an outcrop of volcanic dolerite, the castle is one of the largest inhabited castles in England. The round tower in the centre was a windmill. Behind it is the original square central keep, the oldest part of the present castle, begun in 1164. In the foreground can be seen the arch of St Oswald's Gate, part of the earlier fortifications dating from Anglo-Saxon times.
