The distinctive shape of Chief Mountain, on the eastern edge of Glacier National Park, Montana, can be seen for many miles as you approach from the Great Plains. The mountain and the area around it are sacred to the Blackfeet People of Montana and the Blood tribe of Alberta. Chief Mountain is an excellent example of overthrust faulting, where the rock layers beneath are younger than the mountain above. Erosion has separated Chief Mountain from the rest of the Lewis Overthrust. This type of geological formation is known as a klippe.
