A candle burns continuously to mark the place where Thomas Becket was murdered. Thomas was Archbishop of Canterbury and a great friend and supporter of King Henry II, but they quarrelled over the division of power and revenues between Church and State. In 1170, four of Henry's knights interpreted a statement made by the King as an order for Becket's arrest. They travelled to Canterbury, and when he refused to accompany them, they drew swords and assassinated him in the Cathedral.
