Deserted village of Slievemore, Achill Island

The stone cottages of the village of Slievemore, on Achill Island, have been occupied and abandoned many times over the past 800 years. The most mysterious exodus occurred during the Great Famine, but records of the time are sparse and nobody knows what happened. In the 20th century the village was used as “booley houses”, temporary homes for villagers grazing cattle in the summer months.
