Irrigation of rice paddies in Bali, Indonesia

Young rice plants growing in irrigated terraces in Bali. Water is pumped to the top of the terraces, and then allowed to trickle down to fill each lower one. Planting the rice in water and mud helps to dramatically reduce the number of weeds that are able to grow, since weeds that can survive in water will dry out and die when the water dries up. Terraces are also an efficient way of turning steep hillsides into arable land.
