Round the Barrels
The origins of chuckwagon racing began when drivers used to race each other across the prairie bringing meals to the cowboys on cattle drives. Today it is a dangerous and exciting sport, featuring teams of racehorses and drivers who enjoy celebrity status. The races begin with the wagon and team manoevering around a pair of barrels before streaming out onto a conventional racetrack. Four teams compete in each heat. Strictly enforced rules and regulations have helped to improve the safety record, but the race is still referred to as “the half mile of hell”.
