Singapore Skyline
Singapore Skyline from the Esplanade at the mouth of the Singapore River. Singapore is one of only three true city states in the world. It has been a centre for commerce, industry and finance since its beginnings as an East India Company colony. The population is roughly 4.5 million, and while the population is ethnically diverse and highly cosmopolitan, ethnic Chinese are the majority. There are four official languages, English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil. The skyscrapers of the financial district dominate the waterfront, with the historic Fullerton Building, now a luxury hotel, in the foreground.
