Southern Ground Hornbill

Southern Ground-Hornbill (Bucorvus leadbeateri or cafer), female. Largest and heaviest of the hornbills, these birds are widespread but never common throughout southern Africa. Females have violet blue skin patches on the throat. They are primarily terrestrial. Unlike other hornbills, Southern Ground Hornbills are omnivorous, opportunistic feeders, even eating carrion and catching venomous snakes.
