Steptoe Butte
Steptoe Butte is a quartzite butte that towers 3612 feet above the surrounding Palouse countryside. Now a State Park, native Americans called it the “power mountain”. If you journeyed to the butte, the mountain’s guardian spirit would bestow a gift of power. Today a road winds around the butte to the top, formerly the site of the Cashup Hotel, now a place to relax with a picnic and enjoy spectacular views over the Palouse to the west and south, and to the Bitterroot Mountains in the east.
