Stone Detail, St Albans

Art in the Middle ages flourished mainly in a religious context. The purpose of art was to awe and inspire the viewer with the grandeur of God. The mission of the sculptor, was to educate as well as decorate church buildings. Artistic styles moved away from the formalized Byzantine tradition of Romanesque sculpture, to the realistic, life sized and individualistic concepts of Gothic decoration.
