Storage Huts at Gurnard, Isle of Wight

On the seafront at Gurnard Sailing Club stands this row of wooden huts. Resembling traditional English bathing huts, they are equipment storage facilities for members of the yachting club. At first, they look identical, but closer examination reveals variations in both age and design of the sheds. Each year in August, Cowes Week, the world’s premier sailing regatta, attracts almost 1,000 yachts and 8,000 competitors from amateurs to Olympic and World Champions. Gurnard is located just west of Cowes, and the promenade provides an excellent vantage point for watching the festivities. 2007 was the 180th anniversary of the first Cowes Week.
