The Needles, Isle of Wight

One of the iconic images of the British Isles, The Needles are chalk stack formations off the Isle of Wight. They have been a hazard to navigation for centuries for both commercial shipping and pleasure boats entering the Solent. At the top of the cliffs is The Needles Old Battery, fortifications that guarded the approaches to the harbour at Portsmouth in times past. Today the lighthouse beacon is solar powered.
