The Pelican and the fish
The White Pelican, Pelecanus erythrorhynchos, is considered a threatened species, ranging mainly in Western North America. They are very large birds, with a wingspan of up to 3.1 meters. Unlike their relatives the Brown Pelicans, who fish by diving, the White Pelican catches fish by scooping them up in its pouch. White pelicans congregate near the weir on the Bow River in Calgary. This bird’s patience has been rewarded with a very large fish, which he is just about to swallow. The pelican’s beak expands enormously, and he spent some time juggling the wildly struggling fish before he was able to swallow it.
