Waimea Canyon, Kauai

Each side of Waimea Canyon is composed of layers of different types of lava. This is because the canyon straddles a major fault where a large part of the island slipped downwards during the collapse of the volcano that created Kauai. The colours of the canyon are quite amazing, the reds and oranges of the rocks contrasting with the vivid green of the vegetation. When the sun comes out (and you might have to wait quite a while for it) the effect is magical.
