White trilliums in spring

White trilliums grow best in moist shade in rich woodland, flowering from April to June. Trillium grandiflorum is the provincial flower of Ontario, and the state flower of Ohio. Too much browsing by deer (for which they are a favourite food) will kill the plants. They are often found growing on steep slopes because deer do not enjoy grazing on an incline. The roots of the white trillium were used by Native Americans to reduce swelling of the eye and for cramps.
