Whooping Crane

Whooping Crane, Grus americana, adult eating crab at Aransas N. W.R. , Gulf Coast, Texas. The blue crab found here are a critical component of the diet of this severely endangered species. Reduction of freshwater inflow due to drought and human use of water from rivers to the only feeding grounds of wild bred whooping cranes causes the blue crab to die off and contributes to reduced breeding activities and fewer chicks the following summer. The bird is wearing a radio tracking device that helps monitor the population of the species.
