Wind Surfing in Hawaii
The sport of windsurfing began in the mid twentieth century, although there is considerable disagreement on who was the first inventor. In the 1980s the sport gained popularity, and it was recognized as an Olympic sport in 1984. It was claimed at the time that windsurfing was so popular in Europe that one in every three households owned a board. It is a difficult sport to master. As the baby boomers who first popularized the sport aged, while at the same time equipment became increasingly technical and complex, the sport declined in popularity in the 90s. Recently, boards aimed at beginners have been introduced and the sport is enjoying a revival.
